24/05/2024 - Manipur High Court Utilizes ChatGPT for Research in Service Law Case (India)

argument: Notizie/News - Civil Procedure Law

According to an article on Live Law, the Manipur High Court utilized ChatGPT to conduct research and issue an order in a service law matter. The case involved a Village Defence Force (VDF) member disengaged without a hearing or inquiry after an accused escaped from police custody. The court, unable to get information from the government counsel, turned to ChatGPT and Google to gather information on VDF service conditions. It found that the VDF assists police in maintaining law and order, with volunteers trained and assigned duties alongside the police. However, details on service conditions were lacking. Further research led the court to an office memorandum on VDF conditions and a related case, Nasim Bano v. The State of Manipur & Ors. The court concluded that the petitioner's disengagement violated natural justice principles, as established in the Nasim Bano case. Consequently, the order was set aside, and the petitioner was reinstated.
