On October 3–4, 2024, Tallinn University hosted an international conference titled “The Death of Law? Machines, Technology, and Algorithms Deciding,” where experts from Europe and America will discuss the growing role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal field.
The event aims to explore whether machines and algorithms could one day create and manage law, potentially replacing human decision-makers. Professor Massimo La Torre, the lead organizer, emphasized the ethical and legal consequences of such developments, warning that algorithm-driven laws may undermine individual freedom by treating people as subjects without the ability to interpret or challenge rules.
The conference will feature prominent scholars such as Giuliano Amato, Roger Brownsword, and Gerald J. Postema. Discussions will focus on how technology is reshaping the law, the long-term implications for justice systems, and whether AI-driven legal systems still preserve fundamental rights.
The event is part of Tallinn University’s Global Forum series, which promotes international cooperation and dialogue on critical global issues. The conference is open to legal scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and students interested in the intersection of law and technology.
