This article examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to improve performance and increase public value in Italy’s public administration (PA). As governments face increasing pressure to enhance efficiency and deliver better services, AI is emerging as a valuable tool to streamline processes, reduce administrative burdens, and improve decision-making. AI applications in the public sector include automating routine tasks, managing large datasets, and providing data-driven insights to guide policy decisions.

AI is also being leveraged to improve the transparency of public services, enabling more efficient management of public resources and fostering trust between citizens and government institutions. By implementing AI, public administrations can achieve better service delivery while reducing operational costs.

However, the integration of AI into the public sector requires careful management to avoid potential risks, such as bias in decision-making algorithms and concerns about data privacy. The article concludes by recommending that public administrations adopt clear guidelines and ethical frameworks to ensure that AI technologies are used responsibly and effectively.
