In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the "Spirit of Geneva" conference, held on October 24 2024, brought together experts to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on international humanitarian law. The event, hosted by the Swiss Embassy in collaboration with the Pontifical Gregorian University, explored how AI is reshaping conflicts, particularly in terms of compliance with the Geneva Conventions.
The conference highlighted both the opportunities and risks that AI presents in armed conflicts. AI technologies, such as autonomous weapons, raise significant ethical and legal challenges, particularly regarding decision-making and accountability for violations of humanitarian law. Experts discussed the need for clear regulations to manage the use of AI in conflict zones, ensuring that human oversight remains a core element of decision-making, especially in protecting civilians.
The event also emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between governments, military forces, and international organizations to ensure that AI technologies are developed and used responsibly in accordance with humanitarian principles.
