On 14 November, 2024 India, in collaboration with UNESCO, hosted a multi-stakeholder consultation on AI ethics and safety, marking the launch of a series of workshops under the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM). The event emphasized aligning India’s AI ecosystem with UNESCO’s Global Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, focusing on transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness.

Key highlights included the INDIAai Mission’s progress, backed by ₹10,000 crore in funding, and the unveiling of projects such as the AI Ethical Certification Project and the Privacy Enhancing Strategy Project. These initiatives aim to create robust governance frameworks, ensure privacy compliance, and integrate ethical practices into AI deployment across sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.

The consultation featured discussions on AI’s regulatory and institutional capacity-building needs, with experts advocating for actionable policy frameworks that balance innovation with accountability. UNESCO and MeitY reiterated their commitment to fostering inclusive and responsible AI governance, positioning India as a leader in ethical AI development for global benefit.
