France’s Defender of Rights (Ombudsman) has called for increased human oversight of artificial intelligence (AI) systems used in public services, warning of risks such as bias, discrimination, and lack of accountability. The Ombudsman emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI respects fundamental rights and operates transparently.

The report highlights concerns about AI’s role in administrative decisions, particularly in areas such as social services and justice, where errors or bias could disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. The Ombudsman recommends implementing frameworks to ensure human involvement in critical decision-making processes and to safeguard against algorithmic errors.
