Padre Paolo Benanti emphasizes the need for ethical governance in artificial intelligence (AI) to bridge the gap between innovation and sustainable development. Speaking at the "Intelligenza Artificiale: il nuovo Rinascimento" event organized by Il Sole 24 Ore, Padre Benanti stressed that AI innovation, while groundbreaking, can be ambiguous and potentially harmful if not aligned with societal and territorial needs.

He highlighted the importance of creating shared spaces where diverse perspectives collaborate to envision a balanced future, contrasting the technocratic visions of global digital giants. Benanti explained that innovation becomes meaningful development only when it considers intergenerational equity, regional characteristics, and diversity. He urged policymakers and technologists to interrogate AI’s transformation to prevent societal imbalances.

As president of Italy’s AI committee within the government, he called for collaboration among the best minds to ensure AI supports humanity rather than exacerbating inequalities. The debate between innovation and development, according to him, represents a critical moment for ethical AI governance.
