17/06/2024 - AI Technology Revolutionizes Subsistence Farming in Malawi

argument: Notizie/News - Environmental Law

According to an article from The Japan Times, artificial intelligence is transforming subsistence farming in Malawi, where many farmers struggle with literacy and access to agricultural knowledge. In the village of Ndodo, farmers are using an AI-powered app called Ulangizi, meaning "Advice," which operates on WhatsApp to provide farming advice in Chichewa, the local language. This app, developed by the Chicago-based nonprofit Opportunity International, leverages data from ChatGPT and the Malawian government's agricultural manual.

Anna Chimalizeni, a government farmer-support agent, plays a crucial role in demonstrating the app to farmers, helping them articulate their farming issues and understand the AI-generated responses, either through text or voice notes. This initiative addresses challenges faced by illiterate farmers, enabling them to access valuable information for managing crop diseases and improving agricultural practices.

The introduction of AI in farming is a significant step in improving food security in Malawi, where subsistence farming is vital for the local economy. The app provides immediate, reliable, and localized advice, enhancing farmers' ability to manage their crops effectively. As AI continues to integrate into various sectors, its application in agriculture highlights the potential for technological solutions to address pressing issues in developing countries.
