17/06/2024 - Uganda's Judiciary to Integrate AI for Enhanced Justice Administration

argument: Normativa/Regulations - AI in Judicial Activities

According to an article from New Vision, Uganda's judiciary is preparing to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its judicial processes, drawing inspiration from Tanzania. This move aims to improve efficiency by automating tasks such as transcription, which traditionally burden judges with manual recording and decision-making. The initiative was discussed by the Judiciary Permanent Secretary, Dr. Pius Bigirimana, during a meeting with the Southern and Eastern Africa Judicial Administrators (SEAJAA) in Kampala.

Dr. Bigirimana highlighted Tanzania's success in reducing case backlog and improving the judicial process through AI, suggesting Uganda follow suit. He emphasized that streamlining cases, particularly in commercial courts, would have positive economic impacts. Prof. Gabriel Ole Elisante, chairperson of SEAJAA, reiterated the importance of African judiciaries working together and learning from each other's advancements in judicial technology.

The article notes that Tanzania's judicial modernization, which began in 2015, has positioned it as a leading example in applying ICT within court systems, boasting a 99% implementation of an electronic case management system. Despite facing language barriers, SEAJAA aims to promote Swahili to enhance communication across member countries.
