ONU Italia – This article covers a United Nations roundtable held in Geneva on 11 March 2025, where international experts and delegates discussed the risks that artificial intelligence poses to human rights, social justice, and global equity. The event, hosted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted how unregulated AI can exacerbate inequalities, infringe on freedoms, and reinforce discriminatory systems.
Speakers expressed concern about the increasing use of AI in surveillance, predictive policing, hiring practices, and automated decision-making without adequate legal safeguards. The dialogue also emphasized how vulnerable communities are disproportionately affected by opaque algorithmic processes and data biases.
The panel called for global governance mechanisms rooted in international human rights law, as well as inclusive frameworks to prevent a digital divide between countries with advanced AI and those without. It concluded with an appeal to all UN member states to embed human dignity, accountability, and transparency at the core of future AI regulation.
